Explore Our Velvet Collection

Not all velvets are created equal. To help you find the perfect match for your project, we have categorized our selection based on stretch, weight, and finish:

  • Velvet Stretch (Elastic Velvet): A favorite for fashion designers and home sewists alike. This material offers excellent recovery, a beautiful sheen, and a soft touch. It is the perfect choice for figure-hugging dresses, luxury loungewear, leggings, or stylish children’s clothing.

  • Premium Velvet: If you are looking for a dense pile and deep, rich colors, our Premium line is unmatched. This fabric provides a high-end look and feel, ideal for statement pieces that require a bit more structure and luxury.

  • Decorative & Upholstery Velvet: Planning to refresh your living space? Our decorative velvet is perfect for cushions, curtains, and light upholstery, adding warmth and a "boutique hotel" feel to any room.

Why Choose BubuFabrics?

Sewing with velvet is a journey of texture and light. Unlike other large platforms that may face supply chain instabilities or business uncertainties, BubuFabrics stands for reliability and premium quality. When you shop with us, you get:

  1. Durable Pile & Color Fastness: Our fabrics are tested for quality, ensuring they won’t pill and will maintain their lustrous finish even after washing.

  2. Versatility for Modern Sewing: Velvet is no longer just for gala dresses. It works beautifully in minimalist interiors or as a high-fashion contrast to denim and leather.

  3. Expert Support: Not sure about the "nap" or which needle to use? Our team is here to provide the technical advice you need to sew with confidence.

Pro Tips for Sewing with Velvet

Always pay attention to the "nap" (direction of the pile) when cutting your pattern pieces. We recommend using Stretch or Universal needles and ironing only on the reverse side (or using a steamer) to avoid crushing the delicate fibers.

VELVET - Shopping Guide

Velvet is synonymous with elegance, depth of color, and irresistible softness. At bubufabrics.com, we offer a wide range of velvets—from classic cotton and decorative varieties to modern elastic velour. With its short, dense pile, this material captures light and shadow to give any project a unique character and a premium feel.

1. Which Velvet Should You Choose?

  • Cotton Velvet: Firmer, breathable, and natural. Ideal for blazers, trousers, or high-end children's clothing.

  • Elastic Velour (Stretch Velvet): Soft, drapey, and flexible. Thanks to the added elastane, it is incredibly comfortable to wear. It has a beautiful sheen and is a top choice for trendy tracksuits or elegant evening gowns.

  • Upholstery & Decorative Velvet: Features a higher weight and high abrasion resistance. It is designed for interior transformations, such as heavy curtains, throw pillows, or furniture upholstery.

2. Sewing Inspiration

👗 Fashion & Special Occasions

  • Evening Dresses and Skirts: Velvet adds a dramatic and festive look to any garment.

  • Luxury Loungewear: Velvet tracksuits are not only comfortable but also a major "athleisure" trend for everyday wear.

  • Accessories: Hair scrunchies, headbands, or elegant clutch bags.

🏠 Interior Design

  • Curtains and Decorative Pillows: Velvet absorbs sound and light, creating a cozy and intimate atmosphere in any room.

  • Ottomans and Seat Cushions: Durable velvet types can turn an old piece of furniture into a designer masterpiece.

3. Sewing Tips: How to Master Velvet

Sewing velvet requires a bit of technique to achieve professional results:

  • The Nap Direction (Crucial!): When cutting velvet, all pattern pieces must point in the same nap direction. If placed in opposite directions, the pieces will appear to be different colors due to the light reflection. (Tip: Run your hand over the fabric—it feels smooth with the nap and rough against the nap, where the color looks darker).

  • Pinning and Cutting: Velvet is notorious for "creeping" or sliding. Use sharp pins within the seam allowances only, or use sewing clips to avoid bruising the delicate pile.

  • Needle Choice: For elastic velour, use a Stretch or Jersey needle. For firm woven velvet, use a standard Universal needle (size 80 or 90).

  • Stitches: When sewing stretch velvet, use a stretch stitch (zigzag or overlock) to ensure the seams don't pop when the garment is stretched.

4. Care and Ironing

  • Ironing (The Golden Rule): Never iron velvet directly on the right side! The weight and heat of the iron will permanently crush the pile and leave shiny marks. Always iron on the reverse side at a low temperature. Ideally, place the velvet face-down on a plush towel so the pile sinks into the towel's loops instead of being flattened.

  • Washing: We recommend a gentle wash at 30°C (inside out). Avoid the dryer, as it can damage the delicate fibers of the pile.
